What is Qigong?
- A 4,000 year old practice similar to Tai Chi that combines breath and movement to increase energy, reduce stress and keep joints healthy and supple, based on the belief that our energy, or “qi” can get stagnant if we don’t move our bodies enough.
- The movements can be modified to suit your mobility level and can even be done seated.
What are the benefits of Qigong?
- Early studies show qigong can help improve sleep, prevent falls, increase lower body strength and balance.
- A 2023 review of qigong studies found the practice makes positive changes to the brain in ways that may support memory, spatial awareness and focus.
- It’s especially helpful for older adults who may have mobility or neurological challenges, as it increases strength and stability.
- The slow, rhythmic breathing and movements help to move the interstitial fluid in the body, which can help keep fascia healthy, leading to less chronic pain.
- Stretching movements bring more flexibility to joints and reduce tension.
